Southampton Switches on it’s Christmas Lights!

•November 19, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Southampton switched on it’s Christmas lights last night with the help of Santa Claus and the Mayor Carol Cunio.

The ceremony was held in the Marlands Shopping Centre this evening with the Mayor,  Santa Claus and the assembled cast of the Nuffield Theatre’s A Christmas Carol in attendance.

The display was beautiful this year and well worth the trip to town and back for!  Just before the lights came on, all eyes went to the escalators as Santa Claus himself made his grand entrance from the upper levels!.

After the Marlands was officially lit, Santa and his entourage made their way to the fantastic German Christmas Market to officially open it for the start of the seas

on festivities.

Between the smell of mulled wine and German sausage on the air, the glow of the lights and the excited shouts of the crowds of people and the looks in the children’s faces as they had a picture or a dance with Father Christmas, even a cynical Scrooge like me was forced to admit to being slightly infected with the Christmas spirit.

Thankfully after a quick bite to eat and a pint before heading home, it quickly faded and I can now safely spend the evening with my Xbox 360 and New Vegas, Just Cause 2 and Dragon Age Origins.

–Bah Humbug!!  😉

(Apologies for the bad quality pictures, I forgot my camera and had to use my iPod!.)

New Bioware Viral Campaign?

•November 17, 2010 • 1 Comment

Following from a QR Code posted on Bioware’s facebook page, rumours are circulating about what it could mean.

After scanning the code on a suitable iPhone or similar, it presents a binary string, converting that string into text gives the following number: “55.845” which is the Atomic Mass of Iron (Fe) leading some to believe it is a nod to the upcoming Mass Effect 3 or possibly Dragon Age 2 related…

Only time will tell..

Fallout New Vegas

•November 3, 2010 • Leave a Comment

I waited a week, what more do you expect?….

I finally gave into my Fallout obsession once more and headed out to GAME yesterday and picked up a copy of Fallout New Vegas.

Fallout New Vegas Trailer

I managed just about a week, and finally broke down and bought it (somehow, I think I will be eating a lot of pasta in the near future!).

I have watched every trailer, preview and review for the past year in anticipation, and I recently completed Fallout 3 (other than a few side quests) so the stage is set!.

Some handy sites I use for those who are looking for some more information or help:

The Definitive Fallout Wiki

Official Fallout Site

Been fairly busy the past few days so I haven’t been able to get on the Xbox for very long, but from what little I have already seen I am in for many, many hours of entertainment.

Somehow, amongst the hundreds of reviews and trailers I have seen, I must have missed one as I do not remember anything about there being the option to create your own ammunition and mods for your weapons OR the ability to create meals and poisons and such from recipes!.

How on earth could I have missed such major things?!  from my many hundreds of hours playing Oblivion and Morrowind (and more recently The Witcher and Gothic 3) I have grown accustomed to creating my own weapons, potions and such, now I get to lose many more helpless days creating various odds and ends!.

Well, just a quickie today as I am hoping to dive back in when the Xbox has finished downloading the major update (more info for Xbox 360 owners at Xbox.com.

Minecraft

Wow! It has been months since my last update! I have been so busy with real life issues recently.

I have had some family emergencies these last months so my apologies for lack of updates.

By way of apology, I wanted to kick off my return with a brand new page devoted to the awesome indie game MineCraft.

Check out the new page and you will find links to download the game, try out the free version, the Minecraft wiki and a must-watch tutorial series on how to play and thrive in the game.

Also, those of you who come here for the Dwarf Fortress page, can find the latest updates here.

I am hoping to get more indie games up here soon, so if anyone reading this has any suggestions on what they would like to see, by all means drop me a line at revreese (@) revreese (.) com

The Day Trip of Doom!

•July 22, 2010 • 3 Comments

Oops, I somehow fell into the trap of not writing again! since our bikes were stolen, we have been almost non-stop with companies, letters and meetings here, there and everywhere!.

Well, still waiting for the Police to tell us they have closed the investigation due to a lack of evidence, but so far, it appears they are working hard to nail the guys who took our bikes! if they do catch and punish them, then I will be there…laughing..before visiting my solicitor to get a claim in through him instead of the useless insurance company!.

To try and offset the loss of our only mode of transport, and try to get rid of some of our clutter at the same time, we decided to sell some things on Ebay.

I have been a buyer on eBay for years, but this is only the second time I have tried to sell something (and the last time, no one bought anything!).

Well, so far, so good! I sold nearly half of the books within 24 hours and doubled my Paypal account!

If you are interested, here are my listings:

But for now, it looks like crime really does pay as the thieves have made off with hundreds of pounds worth and got away with it.

I have the Dentist today, I changed recently and managed to get into a closer dentist (saves walking for two hours in pouring rain! 😉

After looking at my teeth the first time, I asked “Is everything ok then?” to which he informed me I needed five fillings.

I hadn’t been able to see a dentist since I was at school due to not being able to register (as they are all private now) and never had any trouble with my teeth anyway.  One day, one of my wisdom teeth shattered (somehow) and I was left with painful, razor sharp shards of tooth at the back of my mouth that I could  do nothing about (it got so bad, I even tried using a file to grind the edges off…didn’t work out so well that one…).

He did half of them that day, even though I hadn’t even filled in the registration form yet! but he had a cancellation so could squeeze me in! Got to get the last few done today so hopefully, I won’t need to bother him again for  a while!.

I never had any problems with my teeth (other than getting my front two kicked in when I was younger!) and suddenly I need five fillings? I thought I took good care of my teeth! could be worse I guess, the water could be Flouridated!.

Went to Weymouth yesterday, with my fiancee and brother in law with a load of local residents and had a great day! apart from losing my phone and getting slightly sunburnt that is!.

We stopped at a town called West Bay, where I spent the next half an hour searching madly for a cashpoint so I could buy some tobacco (in the whole town, I found a single ATM, inside an amusement arcade which wanted £2 off me just to with draw my own money! no thanks!).

After realising that I was not going to be able withdraw any cash in this “town” I managed to scrape together enough change to buy a box of tobacco and have fifty pence or so left to spend in the arcade (oh, how I love those two-pence machines!).

After that little disaster, we decided (well my brother in law decided and we reluctantly agreed) to climb the nearby, near-vertical cliff on the beach, which turned out to be a mistake halfway up as it was so steep and one slip would send us all tumbling down to the beach below.

Nevertheless, we made it to the top, to find the amazing view of the coast up there, that we couldn’t record very well as the camera’s batteries were almost dead.

Heading back to our coach with a few minutes to spare, I noticed my mobile phone missing..it was in my coat pocket, which my brother in law had been carrying on our trek up the cliff.

Looking up at the cliff we had just ascended, and descended somewhat quicker (miraculously without falling) we realised it could be anywhere in this town as we had walked all over looking for the ATM.

I ran to the coach to notify the driver, while the others headed back up the cliff and around the beach.  All the old dears on the coach kept coming down to speak to the driver (who was chatting to me quite amicably) to demand to know what was going on and “is it the young ones?” for all their sweetness and supposed tolerance, they seemed very quick to moan about the “young ones” making them wait a few moments more.

Finally, they came running back, no phone.  Luckily, most of the numbers were backed up at home on paper (isn’t technology supposed to replace paper?) it had no credit on it and was Pay As You Go (after I got screwed over royally by my last contract after my phone was stolen).

Resigning myself, I climbed back on the coach, resenting the fact that I had no drink, no food, I had lost my phone (which I had had for over three years) and to top it off, it was only mid day and we had the whole trip ahead of us yet!.

Eventually, we got to Weymouth, I had a Nuclear-strength Cappuccino (how I needed that!) walked for miles along the beach, before heading back as we were concerned about holding up the coach again.

We got back with over an hour to spare, so we enjoyed sitting by the sandy beach, where we were promptly sand blasted into oblivion.  Even if we were wearing Hazmat suits, I imagine sand would still get in somehow!.

Overall, a nice trip and fun was had by all (other than my phone) and we returned home sandy, sore, achy and needing sleep!.

Well, today I need to get back from the Dentist’s, finish putting stuff on eBay, back up my files and emails, sort out and file away a year’s worth of paperwork, wash up, put some washing on, complete a billion surveys and update revreese.com!.

I guess it won’t all be done today as I am still feeling stiff from yesterday! we have work tomorrow and lots more walking (thanks again bike thieves!).

Then we have a birthday BBQ on saturday! I haven’t played the Xbox 360 for weeks and get precious little time on games even though I spend hours in front of the PC!  Hoping to get some updates on the forum soon, but it is dead currently, so not a priority.

Wow! Just realised how much I wrote! I must have needed to get that lot of my chest! (even though no-one other than me and spam bots will ever read this!).

To think, I am trying to teach myself programming on about five different languages at the moment in order to create my ‘perfect’ game! and picked up an application form for a job today!

Phew! I’m going now!, coffee is calling! as usual, any questions, moans or helpful tips would be much appreciated!

Revreese.com Hacked!

•June 26, 2010 • Leave a Comment

I got hacked.

It had to happen sooner or later, luckily I backed up the other day!.

I only found it because I was told in my dashboard that someone had linked to me.  Following the link I found a random swedish site with no apparent link at all on the page.

Looking in the source for the page instead, I found all the links to parts of revreese.com that don’t exist according to my knowledge.

Checking the server, I found a folder called “heoho” in my public_html directory that shouldn’t be there, containing hacker tools, spam and goodness only knows what else.

Luckily, a quick email to the suberb tech guys at Just Host had the junk removed and blocked within the hour!.

Everything should now return to normal, but please let me know at (adminATrevreeseDOTcom) if you find anything suspicious so I can get rid of it.

My apologies for any inconvenience while this junk was on the site, and I have taken steps to ensure (as much as possible) that it never happens again.

Just a friendly warning to my fellow webmasters about this as I have not seen anything on the internet about this as yet so it must be new.

I strongly encourage all readers to change their passwords for their online logins using the following tips:

Bike Thieves Strike Again!!

•June 23, 2010 • 1 Comment

Got up yesterday morning and left the house, glanced over to where my partner and I keep our bicycles chained and covered to find they were gone!.

Just the covers were left, looking lonely on the floor.

No evidence of any kind was left, so I have launched a campaign to help Safeguard Southampton’s cyclists.

I proposed a sharing of information with any potentially vital information reported anonymously to the Police.

The Police really do have their hands tied with everything else happening in the city, the football, drink, drugs, assaults and everything else so I thought maybe this way, we could band together to help provide more evidence for them to secure a conviction amd hopefully return our bikes!.

This is not a post moaning about how the Police don’t do their jobs properly, nor am I advocating senseless accusations or vigilante action, just a free flow of information as the Police couldn’t possibly be everywhere at once even if they wanted to be!.

My brother in law had his bike stolen from our area a few months back and had a few stolen before that so I took him on as my “experienced advisor”! 😉

Strangely, there were two strong D-locks on the bikes around the two frames and the front wheels so the thieves carried them away! how far could they have gone like that?.

Well, I reported what I could and my advice for others in the same positionis to give every tiny seemingly unimportant detail (i.e distinguishing markings, scratches, stickers etc) as it can be these tiny insignificant details that can secure a conviction and bring these thieves to justice.

I may as well try and claim on the insurance as they were fairly new but I am not holding out hope of getting more than a fraction of what they are worth if anything, as I know these insurance companies have teams of lawyers whose sole purpose is to go through paperwork with a toothcomb and find a loophole to get out of paying anything!.

I will keep you updated and post some links relevant to cycle security and reporting thefts.

New Version of Dwarf Fortress Out!

•June 20, 2010 • 1 Comment

Has over a month gone by already? is it just me or does time just seem to get faster and faster and other times just seems to sit still (queueing for example…).

Well, I shall offer my usual apologies for not updating, things have been hectic as usual! with the planning for the wedding and all the associated headaches, family issues and of course finances taking their toll on my time.

Well some great news for those of you eager to hear more Dwarf Fortress news:  Toady has been steaming away non stop and has been releasing bug fixes and new versions just as quick (well..okay quicker) than I can post them up here.

As of this moment, the latest version is 0.31.08.

Grab your shiny, new copy here.

..And expect that to update again soon.

I have just updated to the new WordPress 3.0.  I haven’t found any errors or anything bad yet, but I am expecting to, so please let me know if you are having any problems viewing the site (with the error code if you can to help me nail it) Thanks.

Just looked at some interesting sites for online courses (some of them free).  As I have not done anything (apart from volunteer work and interviews) since last year, I thought it might be a good idea to study something else.

I will post up shortly with some more information for anyone who is interested.

It still amazes me that with the collective knowledge of humanity at our fingertips, we still waste monumental amounts of time on the internet simply surfing or playing silly facebook games! 😉 (it can’t simply be me can it?).

Maybe a little test? If I can sit down and complete my Paranormal Investigator’s Course before christmas, then could I consider myself responsible and focused enough to take on another correspondence course? Maybe an entry level course or something?.

I think I have managed to talk myself into that little self imposed task, with the internet as my witness I will aim to remain focused and distraction free for as long as it takes!

Finger’s crossed!

Quick update..

Hi! I see you guys are still having trouble with the page redirecting to an error, I really thought I had nailed that.
I will try and find out what is causing it, if you can let me know what link you clicked to take you there it would help a lot thanks!.
Off out in a moment but I will get right back to it when I get in (assuming the 360 doesn’t seduce me beforehand! (running through Mass Effect for the second time before getting Mass Effect 2 and loading my Shepard into it!).
I also have to pay some attention to Fallout 3 and complete that before New Vegas is released (100+ hours so far!).
Will add links and stuff later when I have time.
Oh, I am listening to music on the new Spotify, you may want to check it out!.
